NEWTOWN -- Police have charged an 11-year-old Newtown male with sexual assault, which they consider to be "an isolated incident."

The juvenile, whose identity has been protected, turned himself in to police on Thursday at 9:45 a.m.

He is charged with two counts of fourth-degree sexual assault and two counts of risk of injury to a minor.

According to police, the charges stem from incidents that occurred at a residence and involved the same victim.

The last incident is believed to have occurred in December 2008.

"It didn't have anything to do with any school or anything like that," an officer in the detective division said Tuesday.

According to Connecticut general statute § 53a-73a, fourth-degree sexual assault is applied when an individual intentionally has sexual contact that is unwanted, such as touching, with a person under the age of 15.

As of now the charges are considered "serious juvenile offense(s)," according to police.

A fourth-degree sexual assault is a class A misdemeanor, but if the victim is age 16 or less the charge becomes a class D felony.

The 11-year-old was released to his parent. He is due in court on July 20.
